Reenacting Malvinas. Testimony, art and archive in Teatro de Guerra by Lola Arias
Abstract
The Malvinas/Falklands War took place during the year 1982 between the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom. Either by the impact in the citizens or the veterans who fought in the battlefield, in our country this conflict is still debated in the memorial and collective trauma studies. In this article I will analyze the film Teatro de guerra (2018), by the Argentine artist Lola Arias. In this documentary six veterans who fought in the Argentine and British sides share an artistic project to reenact their memories about the war. First, I will discuss and analyze the exercise of memory in this movie. I will also focus in the dialogue between testimonies, archive material and performance and the dissolution between the documentary and the fictional genre. To achieve this, I will address the posmemorial debates and its repercussions in Argentina, and particularly in Lola Arias aesthetic. Secondly, I propose to analyze the notion of multidirectional memory “raised by Michael Rothberg” to think about the Malvinas’s archives, testimonies and its impact in the youngest generations, given that the sovereignty and the colonial possession of the islands is still in dispute.
